It used to be that passwords were just that—a word. Then they had to include a number, and many sites now require a special character like an asterisk or exclamation point as well. But as websites require increasingly complex passwords, they become increasingly difficult to users remember, creating a problem all of its own—a problem MIT believes neurotechnology can solve.

When we task a robot with moving its arm from one point in space to another, it is governed by only a few simple equations. But real-world physics applications are anything but simple, which has led MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory to develop a new mathematical framework to unify collision with free space movement analysis.

The single-atom thick material known has graphene has been at the center of both research and the Nobel Prize recently thanks to its ultra-thin build and unique electronic properties, spanning applications from water desalination to solar cells. But graphene's usefulness is not exclusive to these applications, as demonstrated by a new type of flash storage being developed with graphene at its core.

Branching out from its reputation for jet fighters and missiles, defense contractor Lockheed Martin has discovered a means for desalinating seawater that requires a fraction of the energy needed for current systems. The process works by filtering water through nanometer-sized holes in graphene – carbon membranes that measure in with a thickness of about one atom.

If traditional inkjet printers have taught us anything, it's that the true expense of a printer is in the ink. Its cost per unit volume surpasses that of gold, oil, perfume and even human blood in most cases, making it the most expensive liquid many of us will ever purchase. In the case of 3D printing, pricey ink cartridges are replaced by spools of plastic filament.
