Solid Concepts Collaborates with AVEDA Congress 2013

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., Oct. 30 -- Solid Concepts was honored to partake in the celebration of art, fashion and beauty that is AVEDA Congress. The event, which takes place every few years, attracted visionaries of the beauty world to an unveiling of new trends, styles and artistic expression. Solid Concepts was responsible for manufacturing three huge head pieces, better termed sculptures, for the Aveda Canada team.

The collaboration of the head pieces began with Ray Civello, CEO of Aveda Canada, and designer Stephen Ma of Xuberance connecting over a shared vision and a napkin. “It’s the old story: I drew little shapes on the back of an Air Canada napkin and that got into Stephen Ma’s hands and the universe aligned,” says Civello. Ma took Civello’s napkin renderings and created beautiful 3D CAD models. Ma then sent the 3D CAD drawings to Solid Concepts to be printed on one of the company’s Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) 3D printing machines. SLS built the headpieces up layer by layer using a CO2 laser and nylon powder. Solid Concepts then painted the SLS sculptures in rich gold, bronze and silver.

The headpieces made their debut at AVEDA Congress 2013 in Civello’s presentation on the catwalk. During Civello’s presentation, each headpiece was unveiled from beneath a sheer black cloth. Each piece brought a unique dimension to the performance, and challenged the capabilities of sculpting by hand. “3D printing gave us the opportunity to look at a whole different way of approaching the design. I can’t imagine how we would’ve gotten that amount of detail by hand; it just couldn’t exist,” says Civello.
